MAKING MONEY THROUGH SNAIL FARMING

Snails are very lucrative and relatively easy to farm as they do not harm people. It also does not require much capital to start and this is why many people are now interested to learn how to start snail farming business in Nigeria.
Unlike other farming business, snail farming needs adequate care with less finance to start and runs it.
There are three most common edible snails in Nigeria that you can start with: Achatina Achatina, Archachatina Marginata and Achatina Fulica. Though there are other types of snails but these are just the common ones in Nigeria

GETTING STARTED
Before starting your snail farming business, below are some things you need to know:

1. Snail House/Pen
This is where the snails will live, feed and lay eggs. It is their home and snails are sensitive to temperatures so you have to make a very suitable condition for them. If you are starting small then you can start in a little space like tyre but I am much focused on telling you to concentrate on the large scale which you will have to make a concrete pen and cover it with wire all around to prevent the snails from escaping and also to keep away predators from eating up your snail.
Spray some loamy soil on the ground of your pen of about one feet up and put leaves to shelter the snails as they prefer dark places and make it easy for you to sprinkle water when needed as snails eat much and reproduce during wet seasons. So you can make most of the seasons to be wet.

2. Snail Feeding
Snails mostly feed on leaves and most of the leaves or fruits are not expensive. It is one of the reasons that makes snail farming business easy to start and run but with adequate care. Some of the foods are Banana leaves,, spinach leaves, coco yam leaves, lettuce, pawpaw leaves and other fruits are apple, cucumber, carrot, peppers, green beans, tomatoes and sweet corn.

3. Snail Eggs and Hatching
Snails will go through a complete mating ritual with each other, usually which will communicate to the other snail for an average of two to twelve hours. When the eggs are fertilized, they will go through a process of growth inside the snail, until they are ready to be delivered.
Snails lay their eggs and bury them into separate places inside a small hole made in the loamy soil you provided. Eggs are white or yellowish and are 4-5mm in diameter. Eggs can take anywhere from several days to 6 weeks to hatch and if conditions are good, around 90% of the babies should survive. Not all eggs will hatch but mostly the eggs hatch.
When the eggs are hatched the young snails eat up their shells which provide them with much calcium for building their own shell and they are likely to eat the shell of other eggs around. Once the snails start growing, it is advisable to separate it with the bigger ones and keep in a different pen for smooth handling.

It takes more than a year for Achatina to harvest to matured snail while others take about 2 years.

Note: Snails are strong and don’t normally have any disease but they are more likely to die in excessive sunlight or exposure.
Snails are very expensive in Nigeria when cooked or prepared. It is sold for an average of 3,000 Naira per plate in some Beer Parlour. And also in most eatery & Fast-foods they are not cheap to buy but cheap to farm.
